The Chicago Perl Mongers and The Perl Foundation are proud to announce the Fall 2006 Chicago Hackathon. It will be a round-the-clock weekend of programming on Perl-related projects with your colleagues in the open source community. Dozens of programmers from the open source community in the midwest, as well as others from around the US, will be getting together to share ideas, work on code, and move their Perl-related projects forward.
The participants set the agenda for what we’ll be working on, but Perl 6 and Parrot are already on the roster of projects. Chip Salzenberg, pumpking for the Parrot project, will be on hand to help with Parrot and Perl 6. Andy Lester will also be driving some Parrot maintenance tasks, and other midwest programmers will be working on their own projects. There’s sure to be something interesting for everyone!
Participation in the hackathon costs nothing. The Perl Foundation is even providing hotel rooms at a special rate if you want to spend the night. Even if you’re in the area for just an hour, stop by, grab a snack or some pizza and talk with other people interested in Perl. You might contribute more than you think just by talking with other programmers.
To find out more, visit http://hackathon.info. If you’ll be attending, please sign in on the Attendees wiki page, and/or email rsvp@hackathon.info . You can also send questions to Andy Lester at andy@hackathon.info

At eComXpo, Chicago GSB alumni David Dalka will discuss why mobile search marketing requires the transformation of a Chief Marketing Officer into a Chief Customer Officer. Dalka asks the Chief Marketing Officer, “Are you ready for the Mobile Search Marketing era? Meeting just in time needs via customer directed mobile search will make the difference between your brand being an adored cash machine or your brand being becoming non-existent, especially with Generation Y.” Customer directed mobile search queries combined with LBS, RFID and stored preference information in conjunction with superior execution and retention efforts will outperform tired 20th century sales pitches. The evolution of Chief Marketing Officer to Chief Customer Officer commences now! Organizations that outperform will have corporate cultures that encourage bottom up innovation, recruit based on competencies and blogs and embrace customer listening fully. Have you redesigned your organization away from product pushes and towards customer listening and real-time customer-driven innovation? Read more about it here

Calling all tech-geeks! The city will be buzzing with robots, PDAs and remote controlled go-carts as Milwaukee welcomes its first BarCampMilwaukee, an un-conference dedicated to learning, sharing and participation. Yes, an un-conference — a conference where the participants create and lead the content of the sessions instead of having a single organizer or group.
“We want to shine a bright light on the technology industry in Milwaukee,” says organizer Pete Prodoehl. “There are great opportunities in this city, it’s just a matter of making all the interesting people aware of each other.”
BarCamp occurs nationwide as an ad-hoc gathering fueled by people who want to learn and share in an open environment. Technology and creativity focused discussions, demos and interaction will form an intense 24+ hour event. BarCampMilwaukee is FREE, but there’s a catch. “Campers” must participate in some aspect of the event, whether it be leading a session, helping with a session, setting up before the event or cleaning up afterward. This powerful participation dynamic creates a unique, technology-focused gathering.
Campers will expand their minds, share their passions and have an unforgettable time. BarCampMilwaukee will take place at Bucketworks.
This is a special event, as it is out of Chicago, but many of us Chicagoans will be travelling to Sunnyvale, CA for this sweet-action event. Be sure to RSVP here, and if you’re a Chicagoan, leave a comment below on this post.
From Yahoo’s announcement:
We’ll kick things off on Friday, September 29th with a free all-day developer workshop. Then we’ll launch a 24-hour Hack Day with an outdoor party into the wee hours, with special guests providing the soundtrack. (Details to come later, but we guarantee this won’t be your usual corporate-wedding-band leading the crowd through 2am group sing-alongs of “Brick House.”) We’ll hack through the night, keep going through Saturday morning, and wind it all up that evening with hacker demos, judging from a panel of luminaries. and special awards for the coolest hacks. We’ll have special guest speakers all weekend, with Michael Arrington of TechCrunch presiding over the festivities. After nightfall we’ll close things out with another round of entertainment that you would be happy to pay for, except that you won’t have to.
