Once you have determined the answer to the question, \”Who is my customer\”, you then need to know how to effectively get your product or service into that customer\’s hands. Marketing and sales are two areas in which budding entrepreneurs find themselves woefully inadequate. Yet these are usually the most important functions of any company, especially small businesses that lack abundant resources. Mike Sullivan is an accomplished entrepreneur who used these techniques to build a very successful company. He is an award winning public speaker and a member of The Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame.

Join us for our next meeting, Anatomy of an XML-based Structured Writing System, on Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at the Carleton Hotel in downtown Oak Park.
Our speaker, Brian Beuhling, will provide an overview of the architecture of a typical XML-based structured writing system. He will analyze the components from document creation and workflow to data storage and distribution.
As more companies develop structured writing strategies, technical communicators will need to understand the common characteristics of successful XML-based publishing systems in order to lead successful implemenations. Vendors may target their products and services at portions of the structured writing architecture such as authoring or web delivery. However, since system priorities vary greatly by company and industry, no turnkey solution exists that can handle the demands of every organization. We face difficult desicions in designing and implementing structured writing systems that will work for our companies.
This presentation considers the interplay among these areas:
About the Speaker
Brian Beuhling is the managing director for Dakota Systems, a consulting firm specializing in publishing technology. Over the course of the past several years, his papers have been presented at XML Europe, AUGI, Web Services One, AIIM and XML.com. He has earned an M.B.A. with concentrations in Finance and Strategy from the University of Chicago and an M.S. in Systems Science and Mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis.
Our Meeting Sponsor: The Master of Science in Communication Program at Northwestern University\’s School of Communication

The BNC Entrepreneur Group is for small business owners looking to expand their network for resources, information, and ideas for growing their business.
Barry Moltz has just come out with a new book, Bounce! The Path to True Business Confidence, and will be giving a presentation based on this.
Conventional business wisdom tells us that there is always something to learn from failure. Not true - sometimes it just stinks! Failure that offers no real learning value becomes a big jolt to the basic business belief system. Both success and failure are simply outcomes in the lifecycle of business where repetition is inevitable and overall process matters far more than any single event or outcome.
Barry demonstrates that developing the resiliency to bounce through these cycles determines who ultimately will succeed. Using real life business examples, he shows that with true business confidence, we can face our fears, let go of shame and failures, use all our choices, be better risk-takers, and define our own brand of success.
After the presentation there will be time to meet Barry in person and for informal networking.
On-line registration will close June 9 or when capacity has been reached. To Register click here
